I just stumbled across this page while bored and googling my own alias, and I must say I'm surprised to have been quoted!

That said, I was just offering some reasons why the US policy was somewhat ludicrous. With the amount of metal I've gotten through airport metal detectors since I posted that (eyeglasses, zippers, watches, etc) I'm pretty confident that you'd have to do almost nothing to 'sneak' a few flash storage devices just about anywhere you wanted to take them.

That said, if I actually had data worth keeping from a government, I wouldn't carry it with me at all.

Hi Andrew. I agree with your suggestions. It's what I meant when I said "..use cyber cafés, other people’s computers or buy yourself a spare machine for web access either to your computer back in Blighty..."

1% of 400 million people is a lot of hardware/stuff to 'confiscate'. It's certainly a high enough percentage to make it worthwhile somehow securing your data (encrypted hard disk or something) and/or accessing all files remotely via a VPN-esque network - which is probably what you should be doing anyway, as keeping critical files on a laptop (which can easily be nicked, lost, broken) is a bad idea.

Hi,

Another Idea for you. Set up Gotomypc or Logmein on you laptop, leave it at home. User Cybercafe or buy an Asus eeepc ( about £200 runs Linux and Open Office too!) and connect to to you PC at home. The data is then resident in the UK (I assume you're in the Uk?) and there would be ' nothing to declare' on you PC.

Worth a try!

Good luck,
