Immigrant Workforce Spreads UK-Wide

The latest figures available from the Office of National Statistics released today reveal that the immigrant workforce from the East European states acceded to the EU in May 2004 is more widely spread across the UK, than any other immigrant group.

This analysis is based on data from the Worker Registration Scheme collected between May 2004 and December 2006 which show a total of 508,487 workers spread across the UK.  Normally long term migrants tend to gravitate to London and the South East. Eastern European immigrants, however, are more evenly spread between London, the East and West Midlands, the East of England and Northern Ireland.

Presumably the above distribution reflects jobs available in the manufacturing and agricultural sectors.  Illegal immigration, however, is clearly not measured by these statistics and it is hard to under-estimate the impact these population movements are having in terms of jobs and recruitment in the UK.
