R&D Expenditure Up By 7% in 2006

Figures released today show that total R&D spend in the public and private sectors during 2006 reached £14.3 billion, an increase of 7% over the previous year.
The pharmaceutical industry continued to lead the way in terms of spend, representing 26% of the total, some £3.9 billion.
The distribution of funding sources was spread between businesses’ own funds (£8.7 billion), funding in UK businesses from abroad (£3.3 billion) and the UK government which funded £1.1 billion in R&D projects, largely in the defense sector.
