carsales It may be a cliché, but it appears that second hand car salesmen have again topped the league of most complained about small business owners, according to data from government advice service Consumer Direct.

Over half the calls to Consumer Direct in 2007 (41,800, up 18%) concerned cars purchased from independent second hand car dealers.

Mobile phone contracts (34,679) and TVs (19,744) received the next greatest number of complaints from consumers.

But it remains the motor trade which makes the greatest number of appearances in the top 10 hall of shame.  Car repairs and servicing from independent garages came in at number seven with 15,253 complaints, while second hand cars bought at sales franchises appearing at number 10 with 13,322 complaints.

It’s usually small businesses that are adept at focusing on customer service at the expense of larger competitors.  What’s up with the motor trade?
