October rise for retail price index.
Official figures from the Office of National Statistics released today show a significant increase in consumer price index (CPI), up from 1.8% in September to 2.1% in October 2007.
An average increase in petrol prices of 2.7 pence per litre during October, thanks largely to the rise in fuel duty rates, was cited as responsible, together with an unusual increase in air fares for the time of year.
For similar reasons, the retail price index (RPI) also moved upwards to 4.2% in October from 3.9% the previous month.
