Workers fearful about jobs as TUC urges people to keep economy in perspective.
More fear and loathing as the economy continues to head towards recession. Today the Trades Union Congress (TUC) put out results of a survey which shows that 13% of the UK workforce, more than three million people, fear they will be out of the job in 12 months time.
Clearly this is not going to happen, but it is another example of how hard both consumer and business confidence have been hit over the last six months.
According to the YouGov poll employees of mid-sized business are most concerned about their prospects with 18% worrying about their jobs.
Rather perversely, bearing in mind the purpose of issuing a survey such as this is to achieve media coverage, Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary said today:
… there is a real danger that if everyone thinks that the downturn will be deeper than it needs to be it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Indeed. Time to stop fanning the flames, perhaps!
